Community Connections
Almost Home
With the tidal wave of baby boomers approaching age 60, nearly
half of our country must soon contemplate issues of aging
for themselves or a loved one. What is needed today is a vision
of aging that defies the conventional notion that with increased
dependence must come a loss of humanity.
Airs January 12:
The documentary Almost Home comes
to KLRU on January 31, 9-10:30 p.m. It follows the stories of
residents, families and workers in a nursing home as they struggle
with the challenges of aging while transforming the medical
model nursing home (think hospital) into a social model (think
neighborhood) that embraces dignity, autonomy and equality.
AARP and the Area Agency on Aging
of the Capital Area
KLRU and its community partners, AARP and the Area Agency
on Aging of the Capital Area, co-hosted a community event
that brought to Austin William H. Thomas, M.D., an international
authority on the culture change in long-term care. Dr. Thomas
inspired and issued a call to action to a crowd of more than
200 persons on December 6, 2005.
