Plant of the Week: Fall Aster

Fall Aster

Tips of the Week

  • Watch out for caterpillars on fall vegetables. Control them with Bt while they're small. Divide spring blooming perennials like iris, Shasta daisies, gaillardias or Indian blanket, cannas, daylilies, phlox. Put some compost into the soil and water well.
  • Also divide groundcovers like liriope and Aztec grass. Cut the top back to a few inches high.
  • If you want to fertilize the lawn, now is the best time to do it. The fall fertilization is sort of like putting anti-freeze in the radiator. It builds the plant's sugars and gets them strong and ready to go for next spring's growth.
