Plant of the Week: Bronze Fennel

Bronze Fennel

Tips of the Week

  • Deadhead perennials that have gone to seed. Collect the seeds, dry them, and keep in an airtight bag or container indoors to pass along to fellow gardeners or plant next spring.
  • Plant strawberries and mums.
  • Chill bulbs that require chilling (tulips, crocus if not pre-chilled). They need about 6-8 weeks of chilling time in the refrigerator. But, don't place them near fruits and vegetables. They are giving are off a gas called ethylene and that will cause your bulbs to react poorly.
  • Continue planting winter crops but be prepared to cover them in case of frost.
  • Mulch marginally cold-tender plants in the garden to protect their roots.
  • Take cuttings of tropicals to pot and keep warm over winter for plants that will freeze.
  • Continue planting trees, shrubs and perennials.
