Plant of the Week: Mexican Milkweed

Mexican Milkweed

Tips of the Week

  • Trim plants that will bloom in fall. This includes Mexican mint marigold, asters, and copper canyon daisies. With a little shaping now, you will improve their appearance. This is last call to do it, though, to give them time to re-grow and set blooms for fall.
  • Check your fruit trees for scale insects. Scale can build up during the summer. A little squirt of summer oil directed right at the scale can help shut that down.
  • Continue planting okra. You can still get in some winter squash, Malabar spinach, and amaranth.
  • Check crape myrtles for signs of aphids (if it seems like the tree is “raining” on you, that's their honeydew secretions).
