Q. What are some good shrubs for shade?
A. One good choice is Japanese aralia, also called fatsia. Another good one is Japanese acuba. A variety called 'Gold dust' has flecks of golden yellow in the leaves, which help brighten up a shady spot. Another good choice to brighten things up is a variegated abelia called 'Sunrise' which features a yellowish variegation to the leaves. And then there is our native beautyberry, which does well in shade, and will reward you with those beautiful clusters of purple or white berries in the fall season of the year.

Eve's necklace (Sophora affinis)
Eve's necklace, a member of the genus Sophora, is related to our Texas mountain laurel, Sophora secundiflora. It's native plant that makes a small tree about 25 feet tall. It's a great one to use when you don't have a lot of room, like around a patio. It provides decent shade as well. One of the nice features is small pink to white blooms in the spring, followed by striking seedpods. Much like the name implies, they form a necklaceóa series of little black seeds in a long thin pod. Eve's necklace is a good tree for our area, but it is one that deer like to nibble on. So until it's tall enough to be out of their reach, you need to give it a little bit of protection if deer hang out in your neighborhood.
