Question of the week

<%=tDate%>

Q. I am seeing weeds in my lawn again. Should I use some weed and feed product on it to control the weed and get my grass growing earlier?

A. No, it is too late to control weeds coming up now. Right now, the lawn mower is your best friend. Prevent problems like crab grass with a pre-emergent applied in the fall.

The best time to apply weed control is not the best time to fertilize turf. Just mow for now. The best solution is to figure out what your turf problem is and fix it for healthy growth.

Consult The Extension service (512) 854-9600 for more information about turf problems and solutionsor visit the A & M Web site.

There is no generic product for lawn fixing. Consult the Extension Service for more information about turf problems and solutions.

Plant of the week

Photo: Dianthus "Firewitch"Dianthus (Dianthus chinensis) a single carnation that is found in many bright colors and is very hardy. The TelStar Series is one of the best Dianthus. Dianthus is a half-hardy annual that will over-winter.
Most varieties range in height from 6 to 12 inches. They grow best under cool conditions and may slump in midsummer. White, pink and red predominate in the color range. Great as bedding plant. Perennials types such as the variety Firewitch do well in Central Texas. All require well drained moist soil and are not very long lived.

Planting tips of the week
  • Time to prepare your soil-before garden fever hits. Get your soil ready by digging in a thin layer of compost. Have a soil test done to determine the proper nutrients to add.
  • Finish planting trees and shrubs now.
  • Do not use a Weed and Feed product since they do not provide what is needed at the proper time. Consult the Extension Office (512) 854-9600 for information about weed control tips and lawn management.
