Question of the week

<%=tDate%>

Q. The leaves on my trees are brown and ragged. What’s wrong?

A. Despite the cooler weather we had this summer, many trees and shrubs show signs of stress—possibly due to a dry winter followed by greater than average moisture.

We’ve also been hit hard this winter by webworms. But don’t worry, it’s not long before the leaves fall and we can look forward to new growth next spring.

Plant of the week

Photo: Flowering sennaFlowering senna (Cassia corymbosa)
Flowering senna, also called Argentine senna, makes a great shrub or mini tree reaching 6-8 feet tall and wide.

Its dark green foliage makes an attractive shrub that can also be pruned into a mini tree form. In late summer through fall the plant is covered with yellow flowers for a stunning show.

It is also a larval food source for sulfur butterflies. It’s reputed that deer do not prefer this plant. It is hardy in all but an unusually cold winter. Avoid pruning from late summer through winter to maintain optimum hardiness.
