Question of the week

<%=tDate%>

Q. When should the lawn be fertilized in the fall?

A. Mid October is the ideal time to fertilize your lawn. A light application of fertilizer now will act like antifreeze for your turf and will help your grass recover more quickly in the spring.

Go light on rate of application; use about ½ of the regular rate Use a fertilizer with a 3-1-2 or 4-1-2 ratio that will supply the needed extra nitrogen and potassium. Do not apply when rainfall is imminent or get fertilizer on sidewalks and driveways, since the wash off would end up in the watershed.

The better method is to fertilize and water in. (Do not use a weed and feed combination).

Plant of the week

Photo: Autumn AsterAutumn Aster (Aster oblongifolius) -- is a fall flowering perennial with lavender daisy-like blossoms. A very hardy Texas native, it is drought tolerant and deer resistant making it an excellent plant for our gardens. It is particularly striking paired with the yellow and gold lantanas blooming at the same time. Autumn aster is a source of nectar for butterflies and other pollinators.
