To Do This Week

Week of October 16th, 2010

  • Plant trees, shrubs, perennials.
  • Plant wildflower seeds.
  • Plant herbs like cilantro, parsley, chervil, rosemary, oregano, thyme, and dill. Avoid basil at this time unless you have a greenhouse.
  • Plant food crops. Remember to sprinkle seedbeds daily unless rain arrives. The seeds need to stay moist to germinate.
  • Don't forget to water new plants! Even though it's been cooler, the ground is really dry. We want to keep this year's new additions well-watered as we head into frostier weather to come. Watering fruit trees now will help them sustain their fruit next spring.
  • Start thinking about rowcover or other ways to protect your frost-tender plants. Plan now to set up hoops or other supports for your vegetables. Don't be caught at the last minute when the surprise shows up in November!
  • Be thinking about where you're going to move outdoor tropicals.
