To Do This Week

Week of June 2nd, 2012

  • Divide daylilies.
  • Water fruit trees and all new shrubs, trees, and perennials. Even ones that are drought tolerant need a deep soaking every week while they're getting established.
  • Plant okra, lima beans, basil.
  • If you have blossom-end rot on your tomatoes, it's a sign of uneven watering or calcium deficiency. You can spray calcium supplements on the foliage, though usually, the first victims are the earlier tomatoes. We can't control rainfall, but try to keep even moisture on your tomatoes rather than total dry-out and then heavy irrigation. The problem should disappear soon.
  • Control stinkbugs on your tomatoes by going out early in the morning and whisking them into a bucket of soapy water. Look under the leaves for eggs and destroy the leaf (with them on it!) The same goes for the red nymphs: they can't fly so are easily squished or tossed into soapy water.
