KLRU programs honored with 20 Emmy Nominations

Austin, TX -- The Lone Star Chapter of The National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences has honored KLRU-TV, Austin PBS, productions and programs with 20 Emmy nominations.

KLRU-produced shows Docubloggers, In Context, Central Texas Gardener, Texas Monthly Talks and The World, The War and Texas received nominations in various categories. KLRU co-productions The Biscuit Brothers, Downtown and State of Tomorrow were nominated for several awards in their categories. Texas Parks and Wildlife, which airs on KLRU, was also nominated.

The KLRU series Docubloggers received a nomination in the Magazine Program-Program/Special / Series category for the episode “Community & Culture,” produced by Domenique Bellavia and Sean Cunningham. The series combines submitted stories from the community with KLRU-produced pieces to create a collaborative collage of Central Texas. The series airs weekly at 7:30 p.m. Thursdays on KLRU.

Producer Sean Cunningham was also nominated for his two of his segments for the series Docubloggers. Segments he produced were nominated in the Arts/Entertainment – News Single Story / Series / Feature category for his story on the “African-American Men & Boys Conference;” in the Arts / Entertainment – News Single Story / Series / Feature category for “The Adventures of Zack Proton.”

In Context was nominated in two categories for “Art Bus Project” in the Promotion – Program – Single Spot category (Elene Ramirez and Dutch Rall, producers) and “Venice, Paris…Amarillo: Images In Context,” in the Photographer – Program / Short Form category (Dutch Rall, Dir. Of Photography).

The KLRU-produced documentary The World, the War and Texas was nominated in two categories for Craft Specialty – Musical Composition / Arrangement (Jim Adams) and in Writer – Program (Non-News) (Scott Hoffman).

Texas Monthly Talks received two nominations in the On-Camera Talent – Program Host / Moderator category for Evan Smith’s work as host. The show’s new season starts this October with episodes airing at 7 p.m. on Thursdays.

Central Texas Gardener, KLRU’s weekly gardening show, was recognized in the Photographer – Program / Short Form category for Jerin Crandell’s work as videographer.

The Biscuit Brothers was nominated in the Children/Youth Teen – Program / Special category for the “World Music” episode. This KLRU co-production features Allen Robertson and Jerome Schoolar as The Biscuit Brothers and teaches children about music. The series airs Fridays at 7:30 a.m. and on Saturdays at 8 a.m. on KLRU.

Downtown received a nomination in Arts/Entertainment – Program Feature / Segment category for “Downtown: Memories of the Armadillo.” Segments of the series were also nominated for Emmys including: “The Main Street of Texas” in the Texas Heritage – Program Feature /Segment category; “Mistresses of Mayhem” in the Magazine Program – Feature / Segment category; and “Neighborhood Revitalization or Gentrification?” in the Public / Current / Community Affairs – Feature / Segment category. Downtown, which features stories about the people and places of Austin’s downtown area, is a co-production of KLRU, the Downtown Austin Alliance and Action Figure. KLRU presents the show’s fourth season in October.

State of Tomorrow, a series about the research taking place at Texas universities, received two nominations. Segments of the series nominated for Emmys include: “Shadow of a Doubt” in the Education / Schools – News Single Story / Series / Feature Feature category; “Aging with Dignity” in the Human Interest – News Single Story / Series / Feature category; and “The Future of Energy” in the Public / Current / Community Affairs – Program / Special / Series category. State of Tomorrow is co-produced by the UT Foundation and Alpheus Media in association with KLRU.

Texas Parks and Wildlife was nominated for best Magazine Program. Additionally a segment of the series was also nominated for an Emmy for “Eggsotic Collection,” in the Texas Heritage – News Single Story / Series / Feature category. Texas Parks and Wildlife is a production of the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department and airs Sundays at 9 a.m. on KLRU.

LONE STAR CHAPTER OF THE NATIONAL ACADEMY OF TELEVISION ARTS AND SCIENCES: The National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences was founded in 1957. It is dedicated to the advancement of the arts and sciences of television and the promotion of creative leadership for artistic, educational and technical achievements within the television industry. It recognizes excellence in television with the distinguished Emmy Award. The Lone Star Chapter, which is based in Dallas/Fort Worth, is dedicated to becoming the primary portal to connect professionals and students in Texas' television broadcast-related fields for networking and career development.
