KLRU Presents New PBS Kids Series
This September
Austin, TX -- Beginning in September, KLRU-TV, Austin PBS, will host a new set of children’s series that incorporate literacy and behavioral and academic skills.
"Most all of the shows are geared to promote the importance of early literacy," said Linda Schmid, Senior V.P. of Educational Services for KLRU. "All have to do with beginning reading and language skills and getting kids excited to learn to read and write on their own."
Central Texas children, and their parents, can experience learning with classic fairy tale heroes, characters from current bestsellers and some animated friends created just for PBS. Times for these educational series are not yet set, but the complete schedule will be available on KLRU.org in August. The new series include:
Word World is a literacy-based, animated series where WordFriends spell their way through “word play” adventures. Monday to Friday beginning Sept. 3
SUPER WHY! tells the story of Wyatt Beanstalk and his friend Super Why, a tiny superhero who lives behind the books in a children’s library. Each episode brings a new twist to a classic fairytale, while showing emerging readers how reading and seeking answers in books can help solve problems. Monday to Friday beginning Sept. 3
WordGirl is an animated series about the everyday life and superhero adventures of WordGirl as she fights crime and enhances vocabulary usage. Each episode introduces up to four new vocabulary words in an engaging way. Premieres in either September or October with weekly episodes
Set in the African savanna, Mama Mirabelle’s Home Movies chronicles the adventures of sassy elephant Mama Mirabelle and the young animal characters she cares for. Each episode aims to illuminate the real world for pre-schoolers by providing insight into animal customs and behaviors. Saturdays beginning Sept. 8
Told from the perspective of five-year-old Betsy, Betsy’s Kindergarten Adventures is designed to ease the transition from home to the school environment by creating interest and excitement about the kindergarten experience. Each episode, Betsy and her friends learn teamwork, academic and behavioral lessons. Saturdays beginning Sept. 8
Premiering in Winter 2007/Spring 2008, the animated series Nate the Great is based on the detective books series by Marjorie Weinman Sharmat.
