Community Organizations Unite for Annual Filming Austin’s Lives Project
Independent film initiative gives Central Texans chance to tell their stories
Austin, Texas — KLRU-TV, Austin PBS, present the third installment of the community film project — Filming Austin’s Lives. This year’s theme focuses on Austin-tatious landmarks. The project is a collaboration between KLRU, News 8 Austin, The University of Texas Humanities Institute and the Austin History Center.
Over the last two years, this independent film project has captured the stories of Austin told through the eyes and voices of its people. This project is an expansion on the UT Humanities Institute’s book Writing Austin’s Lives: A Community Portrait, which features stories about life in Central Texas written by Austinites. Filming Austin’s Lives has taken this project from the page and onto the television screen. Amateur and professional filmmakers of all ages submit short films, each less then three minutes, which focus on a place, person, building, event, location or just a vibe or state of mind that makes Austin unique. Past themes have been “Why I call Central Texas Home” and “My Neighborhood.”
Selected films will be aired on KLRU and News 8 Austin or be streamed on the project’s Web site.
The deadline for submission is October 1. Complete entry details and the mandatory entry form are available at filmingaustinslives.org. All submitted films will become part of the permanent archive of the Austin History Center and will serve as a visual record of what life is like in Central Texas in the 21st Century.
