Web Developer

KLRU, Austin's PBS station, seeks a Web Developer to participate in developing, maintaining, and improving KLRU’s digital presence. KLRU is known for being an innovator within the PBS system and a leader in public media, distinguished by its energetic engagement with the Austin community and for the quality and creativity of its content.

The Web Developer should be comfortable with both front-end and back-end development and be able to build new features, fix bugs, and carry out website maintenance on a variety of platforms. We’re looking for an intellectually curious individual who is willing to find solutions that are the right answer for the specific issue and not based on hot new web trends or specific frameworks — not that we dismiss new ideas or trends when they’re the right choice. We realize that no one developer has all the answers and we therefore embrace learning and exploring new ideas, tools, and techniques. We aim to push boundaries where appropriate and are ready collaborators with other departments and teams. Finally, our goal is to find someone who can keep their sense of humor through busy schedules and tight deadlines and will add to the overall creative energy of our small team.

Previous experience working with nonprofit organizations and fundraising teams is a plus. The Web Developer is a member of the Marketing & Communications team and reports to the Director of Digital Engagement.

  • Collaborates as part of a team with the Director of Digital Engagement, Senior Web Developer, Graphic Designer, and various KLRU staffers to define, design, develop, plan, and launch new web projects in line with KLRU’s digital strategy

  • Manages and supports websites for KLRU and its shows, such as Austin City Limits, Arts In Context, Decibel, Central Texas Gardener, Overheard with Evan Smith, and more
  • Identifies areas for website improvement, adding features and functionality where appropriate
  • Helps to keep systems and workflows well documented
  • Assists in developing creative and customized promotional initiatives across KLRU’s social media channels
  • Performs other duties as assigned

  • Familiarity with web standards, responsive design, progressive enhancement, accessibility and current best practices
  • Demonstrated experience developing websites in a professional context
  • A basic understanding and appreciation of the fundamentals of good user-experience design including an eye for good visual and information design
  • Knowledge of online video and digital media
  • Experience developing for social media platforms a plus
  • Demonstrated ability to work on diverse projects simultaneously
  • Comfortable communicating with organization staff and management about project status and needs
  • Ability to manage personal time and tasks, work independently, and learn new technologies
